Creativity
New media platforms continue to foster our creativity by
providing us with opportunities to express our own ideas, while also giving us
exposure to the thoughts and opinions of others. As shown in Brooks Barnes’
article “Disney Tolerated a Rap Parody of its Critters. But Why?,” when various
individuals began to use clips from SpongeBob to create a “Crank that (Soulja
Boy)” mashup, Nickelodeon, the rightful owner of the children’s show,
encouraged their audience to continue creating more mash videos utilizing the
program’s original content. As a result, we’ve continued to see more SpongeBob
mashups involving popular anime OSTs, EDM, and various other music categories. Based
on this example, it can be said that new media has not only helped in promoting
individuals’ imaginations but has also enabled different characters to connect
through familiar cultural icons. By establishing such a community, we’ve
continued to inspire, as well as feel inspired, by people of different cultures
and backgrounds. One thing is for sure, without any new media platforms, none
of the details mentioned in this blog post would be set in motion today.
