With China recently announcing plans to rank all of its citizens on a “social credit” system by 2020, I believe that several parts of the world could also follow along in adapting a similar system; inevitably causing a spark in the current landscape of new media. For example, because China is planning to use this credit system to determine which privileges could be granted, or stripped away, from each individual, people could begin creating virtual reality worlds in which they could “practice” certain behaviors. By testing which behaviors would be beneficial and harmful for their credit rankings, people could then utilize this simulated knowledge to see how they could improve their current status. Furthermore, people could also transfer what they have learned onto elaborate blogs which detail how an individual could begin improving their current ranking. All in all, I truly do believe that with such a system being put in place, people could definitely begin utilizing virtual worlds and blogs even further.

  1. Hey Josh,

This is a very scary concept (and a Black Mirror episode), to be judging people based on a credit system but I do agree that if this is where the world is to go, a virtual reality world could be put in place to practice certain behaviors.
Even currently, I believe things like sports can be practiced in virtual reality worlds to gain muscle memory and habits that can translate to real world scenarios.

  2. I've read about China's new social credit system, and the initial reactions seem very apprehensive of the consequences from this (and rightfully so). Your suggestion definitely seems feasible in one way or another, even if it doesn't apply directly to the social credit system. People can use virtual worlds to undergo training for jobs (police/firefighters) and obtain necessary skills and learn from experience without putting them in a real scenario with potentially life-threatening consequences.
